This article is a strange one to write for Where’s Mel Now? but it has really affected me this year. When I’ve posted updates on my page I’ve been so disappointed when hardly anyone saw them. But this is happening to everyone so it seems worthwhile to spread the word.
At the beginning of 2018 Facebook and Instagram (owned by Facebook) changed their algorithms. The result lead to less of your friends seeing anything you post. Where as before your facebook feed would show everything in chronological order, now it mostly shows you posts in order of how much they were liked by other people. When you post something facebook shows it to 1% of your friends. If those friends like and comment on it then it shows it to another 5% or your friends. If they like it too then it gets shown to more people and so on. So if you’ve found yourself wondering why your best friends didn’t like your latest status update it might well be because they didn’t see it.
Facebook say they made the change because they want people to interact with their feed and not casually scroll through without ever liking anything. So the more people that comment or like a post, the more other people will see it.
But this also means that the stuff you see in your own feed may not be that interesting to you. Your feed is probably chock a block with the latest viral videos or updates about a person you barely know running a marathon. But then you never get to see the picture your nephew did at school that day. So what do you do if the people you’re really interested in never appear in your feed?
Here’s three hacks to make sure you don’t miss out on seeing the things you want to on facebook:
Click ‘Get Notifications’ on your favorite people
This is your most guaranteed way of never missing something someone posts. The only thing to be aware of is that your notifications can get a bit crazy and over crowded if you select a lot of people so it’s best to only mark the people who you really enjoy reading their posts. And if one of your friends has a tendency to post 10 pictures of their cat every single day you might want to avoid marking them as you’ll get a notification every single time. Besides, if they’re posting that many times a day you’re likely to see at least one of their posts each day without actually doing anything!
How to do it:
1 – Go to your own profile and click on ‘Friends’
2 – This brings up a list of your friends. Next to each friend picture is a little tab with a tick:
3 – Hover over this button & click ‘Get Notifications’ for anyone who you always want to see updates from:
Mark your favorite pages with “See First”
When you mark a page or person as ‘See First’ whatever they post will always come up in the top of your feed. So if your favorite pages are Alan Partridge Quotes or Where’s Mel Now?, mark them as see first and that will transform your feed. The only catch is that you can only select a maximum of 30 people / pages.
How to do it:
1 – Click on a page or friend that you want to see first. On that page will be a tab that says ‘Following’:
2 – Hover over the ‘Following’ button and you will see a drop down menu:
3 – Select ‘See First’:
4 – Select ‘Let’s Do It’. This will bring up a list of all your friends and pages. Scroll through and click on the pictures of anyone you want to see first:
A star appears in the corner of anyone you have clicked:
5 – Click ‘Done’
Unfollow anyone who you don’t enjoy seeing posts from
This isn’t the same as unfriending someone. It saves the awkwardness of unfriending and instead just removes the stuff they post from your feed. So if one of your friends posts conspiracy theories all day long or nothing but photos of their daily protein shake then you can unfollow them without offending them.
There’s a also a fantastic option for snoozing people. So if someone has just recently started posting lots of annoying stuff then you can opt to not see any of their posts for 30 days. Once the 30 days is up then their stuff will automatically appear in your feed again.
How to do it:
1 – After you have marked anyone you want to see first and clicked done you will see a preferences menu. Click ‘Unfollow people to hide their posts:
2 – This will bring up a list of all your friends and pages. Scroll through and click on the pictures of any people or pages you want to unfollow:
3 – Click ‘Done’
And there you have it. Your facebook feed should be transformed!
I hope you found this helpful. If you did then please share so other people can get control of their facebook feed too.
